Mental Toughness in Sport

Friday, Feb 12, 2010
One of our members, Liam McDougall, is a final year student in Sport development & coaching at the University of Lincoln. He is undertaking a dissertation research project looking at the interesting subject of mental toughness. His objective is to look at how coaches develop (and possible convey) mental toughness in athletes, and would be very appreciative of any coaches willing to take part in an interview to help him with his study. Interviews would be recorded to aid data collection and shouldn't run any longer than 30-40 minutes. All basic ethical considerations will be followed.

Fun Soccer Games for Kids

Monday, Jun 1, 2009

A new soccer manual that makes it easy to coach fun games to young children is published this month.

Fun Soccer Games for 5 to 8 Year Olds provides 25 simple and engaging game ideas for dads and mums who may be coaching for the first time.

Every game has a theme that boys and girls can relate to including "Space Wars", "Ghost Hunters", "Aliens" and "Pirates of the Caribbean".

The manual is written by Keith Boanas, a coach educator with the English Football Association and head coach of Surrey County Football Association in England .

In line with guidelines adopted by the English Football Association and United States Youth Soccer, the games teach basic soccer skills, promote teamwork, encourage creativity, and most importantly ensure the kids have fun and keep coming back.

Boanas said: "At this age, above all else, children want to have fun. Games are fun which is why we continue to play them well into adulthood."

The manual is from specialist sports coaching publisher Green Star Media and is available in two formats, an A5 spiral bound pocket book and A4 colour PDF.

As well as 25 fun and exciting games, the manual has 25 tips on coaching young children collected by Boanas over nearly three decades of soccer coaching.

Each game is explained on a single page, which can be printed from the PDF version, shared with assistant coaches, and taken out on the pitch as a coaching aid.

Fun Soccer Games for 5 to 8 Year Olds has been designed for coaches to be as easy to use and understand as possible. For each game you get the following:

•  Set up - Showing everything a coach needs to run the game, from the suggested number of players, to the size of the area, and the number of balls and cones.

•  Main Objectives - What is the game principally teaching? Passing, dribbling, tackling, heading.

•  The rules - Who goes where, how to score a point, who wins. This section has everything you need to know to keep the game running.

•  What to call out - Never be lost for words with these concise phrases to address the key factors of each game and to boost your player's confidence.

•  Progressions - Ways to adapt and develop the game to suit your players.

•  Coaching hints - That little bit of advice. These hints are not key to the game but they'll make your life a little bit easier.

•  Difficulty - Indicating the relative difficulty of game. Choose from easy, medium and hard. Even new coaches will find them easy to run.

•  Key - Making sure you can differentiate between runs and passes, and pitch markings and try lines in the illustrations.

•  Illustrations - Three pictures clearly show how the game is set up and developed, and roughly how it should unfold as you play it.

Kevin Barrow, publisher said: "This manual is all about fun for the kids and making life easy for the mums and dads doing the coaching."

Fun Soccer Games for 5 to 8 Year Olds is only available online. A4 PDF £7, A5 pocket book, £10 or both versions £12. To order visit their website by clicking the link below

New Competition...

Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009

Congratulations to Tom Hitchcock of Cornwall who correctly answered our last competition question:

'Name one of the current PUMA stars who wears the new gold and black V-Konstruct football boot.'
You could of course had a whole host of names, but the most prolific ones at moment
are Shay Given and Nemanja Vidic.

Tom wins a pair of the gold and black v-Konstruct boots, well done!

Why not try your luck on the new question now?!

Help out a student...

Thursday, Mar 12, 2009

We have been contacted by Hasmat Mustun, a student from Roehampton University. He is looking for help and assistance with one of his modules in journalism.

His feature story is looking at the way money (from takeovers) has affected the top flight game and he'd appreciate the opinions of coaches of the game. Additional to this, Hasmat is researching how the money is affecting Youth Academies in England. He would really like to talk with coaches about the state of youth development within the country and ask if the amount of money in the current game is risking the future of English football?

If you think you can help, please contact Hasmat direct on has_2006@msn.com

Thanks in advance coaches, your help and efforts are really appreciated.

Are there any coaches interested in leather?

Thursday, Feb 26, 2009

A market research agent has been in touch looking for an experienced Football Coach to take part in a research group. They are gathering a group of various sports coaches and keen sports participants that can talk articulately about the equipment/kit used in their activity.

This is a leather project, so they will be talking specifically about leather kit eg. boots, gloves, balls.

With the advent of new high tech fabrics that are eclipsing leather they have  come up with some new ideas around: impact sensitive, heat senstive, climate control (stops you getting sweaty), replacement for Gore Tex (breathable), super light leather, super strong etc . So now they are looking for feedback and creative input on some of their new innovations.

Respondents should be open to the idea of leather (no respondents against it, no vegans, vegetarians or people who are anti leather), be quite serious about their sport or coach it, and know something about their equipment / materials used and what they need for better performance / comfort etc....

Is there a Coaches out there interested in helping, if so please contact Chloe Martin on 07904122392 or email: chloemster@gmail.com

Group takes place on Monday 2nd March, 6-7.30pm, Kings Cross.
Participants will be paid GBP60.

Thanks in advance coaches!

Looking for some help getting tax refunds?

Thursday, Feb 26, 2009

The Association of Football Coaches is happy to offer the services of Peter Clare and his company Mr Tax.

Did you know that one in three employed taxpayers overpay their tax. Even if the refud amount is small, would you rather not choose to claim and give it to your favourite charity? A refund claim can go back five previous tax years so a small amount can be come much larger.

Being a member of The Coaches Association involves paying a subscription. This is an approved deduction and should be reflected in the Notice of Coding that HMRC supply to you. If it is not, then you can claim. If you work from home, you are spending money on behalf of your employer - another example where you can claim.

Another common expense for coaches is travel other than to and from the normal workplace.  Your employer may well pay you for this travel but HMRC rules allow you to claim 40p per mile up to 10,000 miles in the Tax Year and 25p per mile after that. If your employers payment is less than this, you can claim the difference.

If you feel that you have met unclaimed expenses for your employer, calculate how much and compare this to your coding allowance. If there are no specific entitlements shown that match your expenses, then you are probably due a tax refund.

If you have any questions or queries call Peter on 0800 9701061 or email peter@peterclare.com and provided you have a copy of your coding notice or your Tax Reference, they can do the rest. Beforehand you should either collect all your receipts together or make a list of the amount spent in the tax year - ie. 6th April to 5th April.

So what are you waiting for?

Going up a Level?

Monday, Jul 21, 2008

Association of Football Coaches member, Neil Loxton, has recently written in about his experiences in completing the FA Level 2 coaching course. He has a few tips and pointers to anyone else who is about to embark on their Level 2, or who is thinking about it.

'I have just finished the first part of my Level 2 coaching course, and I  would like to inform other members thinking of doing the Level 2 course of the difference.
First of all it is both mentally and physically demanding and challenging. The gap between the Level 1 course and the Level 2 course is huge and the difference is incredible.
Take LOTS of notes and draw all the grids, don't be afraid to ask questions and ask lots of them. Be prepared to be inventive and fend for yourself.
If you have just finished your Level 1 or are new to coaching and want to become competant and then go for the Level 2 as it makes you a much more rounded coach and you'll notice the benefits.'

Thanks Neil - good luck with the rest of the course and we look forward to seeing your new found skill and knowledge at the Newcastle event!
